How Do I Get To Heaven?

Living life from day to day
And reading books from page to page,
I know life is just my stage
And I wish I could, I said I would,
I know I should do something good
And my God, I fear I'm shedding tears,
The colors change from year to year
Around here

And I said
How do I get to Heaven from here,
I wanna know
How do I get to Heaven from here

Holy Toledo, where does the time go
My dreads are locked,
My watch is stopped,
My glass half full, my gun is half-cocked
Mmmm, Holy Toledo, oooo

Now I've said too much, I'm losing touch
Step on the gas and off the clutch, mmmm
Oh, I'm gonna leave Toledo,
Have no fear well time goes slow
But I'm shifting gears

And I said
How do I get to Heaven from here,
Well I wanna know
How do I get to Heaven from here

Holy Toledo, where does the time go
My dreads are locked,
My watch is stopped,
My glass half full, my gun is half-cocked
How do I redeem my sins
Well, I sure hope
St. Peter's gonna let me in Holy Toledo, mmmm

& I said how do I get to Heaven from here,
I wanna know how in the hell
Am I gonna to Heaven from here

Holy Toledo, where does the time go
My dreads are locked,
My watch is stopped,
My glass half full, my gun is half-cocked
How do I redeem my sins
Well open up St. Peter
Ya better let me in
Holy Toledo

& I said how do I get to Heaven from here

The Blame Game

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them. - George Bernard Shaw

Blaming the present on the past is a cop-out.

Love of Liberty

The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves. - William Hazlitt

People Remember

People forget how fast you did a job -- but they remember how well you did it. - Howard W. Newton

Don't cut corners.

Today my blog is 5 years old. 1298 posts so far. I've searched for quotes which have struck some cord within me. That cord is the starting point for my remarks.

Many of you read my blog by RSS Feed Readers, E-Mail, Twitter or Facebook  and never go directly to the site itself. I would encourage you to do just that. You can choose topics, search for words used, search by author, etc. I've tried to make it a resource - not just a daily amusement. A particular quote might not give you the solution to your problem, but it might get your thoughts headed in the right direction. The address is http://lylewisdom.blogspot.com

I'm constantly searching for new quotes so if you have one which you like, send it to me and I will add it to my list. You may add it to the comments of a post (I won't publish the comment) or e-mail it to me (my address is on the blog).

Enemy of Knowledge

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. - Stephen Hawking

Enemy of The Truth

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought. - John F. Kennedy

Belief in myth is accomplished with faith.

Not Really Hinderences

Trials, temptations, disappointments — all these are helps instead of hindrances, if one uses them rightly. They not only test the fibre of a character, but strengthen it. Every conquered temptation represents a new fund of moral energy. Every trial endured and weathered in the right spirit makes a soul nobler and stronger than it was before. –  James Buckham

Every cloud has a silver lining - or a gold lining if approached correctly.

Writing Well

The reason why so few good books are written is that so few people who can write know anything. - Walter Bagehot

If you aspire to be an author learn about something specific so you can write about it well.

Beauty?

Beauty? Let me tell you something - being thought of as 'a beautiful woman' has spared me nothing in life. No heartache, no trouble. Love has been difficult. Beauty is essentially meaningless and it is always transitory. - Halle Berry

Being a beautiful person on the inside will spare you much.

Censure

Most of our censure of others is only oblique praise of self, uttered to show the wisdom and superiority of the speaker. It has all the insidiousness of self-praise, and all the ill-desert of falsehood. - Tryon Edwards

Squeaky Wheels

I hate to be a kicker,
I always long for peace,
But the wheel that does the squeaking,
Is the one that gets the grease. - Josh Billings

Josh lived when you traveled in buggies or carriages. A "kicker" was an ill-behaved horse. Wheels didn't have bearings - wood to wood or metal was the normal. They squeaked when they ran dry of lubricant. The above poem is where the saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" comes from.
