What is Ambition?

Moderation is the feebleness and sloth of the soul, whereas ambition is the warmth and activity of it. - Francois de La Rochefoucauld

Ambition is the pursuit of achievement. Whether that ambition is moral or not depends on the goal of the achievement. The ambition of the rebel whose goal is the domination of other people, is immoral; the parents goal to improve their home is moral.

What is Friendship?

What men have called friendship is only a social arrangement, a mutual adjustment of interests, an interchange of services given and received; it is, in sum, simply a business from which those involved propose to derive a steady profit for their own self-love. - Francois de La Rochefoucauld

One need not be enamored with all of a friends values - it really is a mutual trade. One may have a secret love but one couldn't have a secret friend.

What is Fear?

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. - Marie Curie

Just as nerves tell you if you are injured or well, emotions like fear and love tell you about your well-being - though the evaluation is instantaneous and therefore subject to error.

What are Emotions?

The degree of one's emotion varies inversely with one's knowledge of the facts - the less you know the hotter you get. - Bertrand Russell

Emotions are a response to the outside world guided by your inner premises. So, just as you must always check your premises, you must also check your emotions.

What is Love?

"Love" is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own... Jealousy is a disease, love is a healthy condition. The immature mind often mistakes one for the other, or assumes that the greater the love, the greater the jealousy. - Robert A. Heinlein

Love is an emotional response of a person to the virtues of another.

What is Beauty?

People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder,' and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves. - Salma Hayek

Beauty is harmony - to have things inside yourself orderly, indispensable and truthful is truly beautiful.

What is Pride?

Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and importance, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction. - Margaret Thatcher

Pride is the sum of all virtues. False pride is better called conceit - there is little to sum.

What is Valuable?

If dandelions were hard to grow, they would be most welcome on any lawn. - Andrew V. Mason

If gold was easy to find it would not be a precious metal. "Value" is a measure of human effort.

Government Deficits

The government deficit is the difference between the amount of money the government spends and the amount it has the nerve to collect. - Sam Ewing

If politicians really cared about the people of this country they would attempt to extract as little as possible out of them.

Separating the State

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death. - George Carlin

The same could be said about separation of the Economy and State - too bad the framers didn't go there.

Strong Management

Strong managers who make tough decisions to cut jobs provide the only true job security in today's world. Weak managers are the problem. Weak managers destroy jobs. - Jack Welch

In all of life, being strong and acting on your strength generally does not make you popular at the moment - it's a long term investment.
