Perverted Government

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. - Thomas Jefferson

This is why the Constitution of the United States was written limiting the power of the government. By slow progression the undereducated people have given over power to Washington - my fear is that it will lead to greater and greater tyranny.

Coffee Machines - Guest Blog

Each morning I get up and put the coffee pot on. I then tell it to make coffee faster - it's important. Now I've had this particular coffee maker for over a year and it still takes the same amount of time to make coffee. Now matter whether I'm nice to it, swear at it, beg it.......it still makes coffee no faster. I bought it because it suited my needs (price, size, options, etc.). I failed to add in one requirement - that it make coffee real fast. I added that desire after it came into my home so I guess I can't expect it to change. It makes coffee at the speed it does and will continue to. I can't get mad at it because that is just the way it makes coffee - because I want coffee faster should not (and cannot) change the way it makes coffee.

Education vs Intelligence - Guest Blog

You're not dumb, just under-educated - Lyle Wilson

When the old man tutors kids he always believes that the road to success can only be cleared by eliminating reasons (prejudice, intelligence) why you can't succeed. You or the people around you can always give you a perfect reason to fail.

The Nature of Coin

All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise, not from defects in their Constitution or Confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, so much as from the downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation. - John Adams

This seems to hold true even over 200 years later - fantastic insight!

Discovering What Is Teachable

For me, the first challenge for computing science is to discover how to maintain order in a finite, but very large, discrete universe that is intricately intertwined. And a second, but not less important challenge is how to mould what you have achieved in solving the first problem, into a teachable discipline: it does not suffice to hone your own intellect (that will join you in your grave), you must teach others how to hone theirs. The more you concentrate on these two challenges, the clearer you will see that they are only two sides of the same coin: teaching yourself is discovering what is teachable. - Edsger W. Dijkstra

You don't have to be involved in computer science to learn from what he says here.

The Eagle, Ben Franklin, and the Turkey

Franklin’s Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)
“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
“With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country . . .
“I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.”

The Future

People ask me to predict the future, when all I want to do is prevent it. Better yet, build it. Predicting the future is much too easy, anyway.
